“Well shit…” Charlie hissed to herself as she surveyed the painting that had ended up on the canvas.
It was…interesting at best. Good, not by a long shot. Sighing loudly, she picked up her brush once more, convinced that maybe she could save the image with a few more well-executed strokes. “Fuck!” No, that definitely hadn’t made it better. In fact, Charlie was certain that those added lines had pushed the painting over the boundary between mediocre and horrible. Another great sigh escaped her.
/I can’t give this monstrosity to my girlfriend,/ Charlie thought miserably. She covered the canvas over with a big white sheet, a note pinned to it saying, “keep out. It’s a surprise”
“Well, it’s certainly surprising,” Charlie sighed. She grabbed the car keys and her wallet and drove to the nearest jewelry store to get Jo a real present.
They had a nice night in. Charlie made dinner, Lasagna. Yeah, it was pretty lame, but she really didn’t know how to make much else and Jo said she loved it as long as it was made by Charlie. Charlie thought this might be a good time to reveal her other not-so-fantastic creation.
“Now before you judge me, I know it’s not good and I give you permission to hate me forever, but I tried my best. I uh…made this for you,” she said, presenting the painting with a force smile and the pink tint of embarrassment across her cheeks.
“I love it!” Jo said, her face lighting up.
/Well…that was unexpected…/
“Umm, are you sure?” Charlie said, glancing once again at the painting to make sure it hadn’t magically transformed into a masterpiece. Nope, still ugly. “When was your last eye exam?”
“No, it’s…it’s lovely,” Jo tried her best not to sound in pain while saying that.
Charlie shrugged. “Well, I mean, if you like it, I guess mission accomplished, right?”
Jo nodded and turned to Charlie, “Just…next time you try painting, maybe you should try something…else. Just…anything but realism, okay love?”
“Okay.” Charlie grinned and her girlfriend leaned in and kissed her sweetly on the lips.
