Fill, Team Balthazar/Castiel, Anniversary (Balthazar/Castiel)

“It’s just a day Balthazar! There’s no need for anything, no parties, no presents, nothing. I don’t want anything, do you understand?”

Balthazar’s face fell. All he’d wanted was to hold a party in remembrance of their get together anniversary. It was something he was proud of. Something that he wanted to remember and something that he wanted others to remember as well. Why didn’t Castiel want to commemorate it too? “Why do you do this Cassie? Don’t you want to remember the day that we started going out together?”

“There’s no big deal in that,” Castiel sighed. He didn’t understand why Balthazar was going to so much trouble to rent out a club to throw them a one year anniversary for being together, “It’s not as if it’s a wedding anniversary. Who commemorates the day that they started going out? You can ask any one. I bet they don’t remember.”

“But I do…” Balthazar trailed off as he hung his head, closing his eyes as he took a deep breath to calm himself his voice low as he spoke, “It’s something important to me Cassie that’s why I want to commemorate it.”

“Well maybe it’s not important to me!”

The words were out of his mouth even before he knew what had happened and Castiel saw it, the way the light went out in Balthazar’s eyes, the way his face fell and it was as if his heart was being trampled upon. He looked so broken in that moment that Castiel wished he could take back the words.

“Balth-” he whispered reaching for him.

“Don’t.” Balthazar growled moving back from Castiel’s hand as though it were diseased. Then he turned from him, headed for the door.

“Balthazar! I’m sorry!” Castiel cried as he followed after the other.

“Don’t apologize. I don’t need it,” Balthazar said grabbing his jacket and pulling it on as he blinked rapidly. He wasn’t going to fucking cry in front of Castiel. He let himself out of the apartment Castiel still calling to him as he slammed the door shut.

‘How can I be so stupid!’ Castiel thinks to himself as he heaves a sigh, falling onto the couch, head in his hands. How could things have gone so wrong?

------

Balthazar stared at the phone the red light was blinking. He ran a hand through his hair. It was another one of Castiel’s messages. He wanted to delete it just like the rest but he’d gone so long without hearing Castiel’s voice that he found himself playing the message.

“Balthazar, open the door. I’m outside.”
The message was about two hours ago yet Balthazar found himself going to the door of his apartment and opening it in the hopes of seeing Castiel. He truly did miss him…

Castiel was there, sitting in the hallway, head resting atop his knees, arms wrapped around his legs, asleep. Balthazar felt his heart melt at the sight.

“Cas…Cassie…” someone was calling him. The voice was familiar. “Cassie wake up.”

Castiel opened his eyes to see Balthazar there. He threw himself into Balthazar’s arms without any warning, hugging him tight as they tumbled into Balthazar’s apartment.

“I was so worried. You didn’t pick up my calls for two days so I came down and you still didn’t ans-”

Balthazar stopped him a finger on his lips, “Shut up, you’re babbling. Why are you here?”

“I’m sorry…” Castiel said as he held on to Balthazar, “I didn’t mean what I said. I used the wrong words and I made you sad,” he said, then continued, “Us meeting is important to me but I don’t want large extravagant parties. I want it to just be us. No one needs to know but us if it’s our anniversary. As long as I have you there it’s a party enough.”

Balthazar nodded, extricating himself from Castiel’s arms and taking hold of his hand instead. He kicked the door shut as he led Castiel into the apartment, sitting him down on the couch. Now it was his turn to explain.

“Cassie you need to understand that to me every little thing we do is important. Like when we first kissed, when we first made love and even something as small as when we first held hands. I want to treasure all of it, I want to show you that I love you so much more than anyone else,” he says seeing the understanding in Castiel’s eyes, “I didn’t think that you wouldn’t like it. I just wanted everyone to know how happy we were together and also to make sure they didn’t try to steal you away from me…”

Castiel laughed at that and he pulled Balthazar in for a quick kiss, “I won’t let them steal me away from you,” he whispers, “and if you put it that way…you can have your little anniversary thing. But…not too many guests alright?”

Balthazar grinned, “I’ll try.”

If they were going to be together from now on, then Castiel knew he needed to open up and become more of a ‘people person’ like Balthazar. And Balthazar likewise, respected the fact that sometimes, Castiel could be shy and such a simpleton, but that was good because this way, they balanced each other out perfectly and made the perfect couple.
