“I think most of the angels have seen it before,” Samandriel casually remarked as they passed by one of the stores in the road that sold fireworks amongst other stuff.
“Most?” Adam asks but Samandriel is too far ahead to hear him. “You mean you have never seen it before…”
There’s a sign in the window ‘4th of July Fireworks’ it reads. That’s tomorrow. The beginnings of an idea form in Adam’s head; maybe he could bring Samandriel to see the fireworks. Just the two of them together.
“Adam?” Samandriel calls from further down the street.
“Just a second!” Adam takes note of the time and place and continues on down the street, joining Samandriel, “Are you free tomorrow night? You wanna go out?”
Samandriel nods and smiles, “Sure, where do you wanna go?”
“I was thinking we could head down to the 4th of July thing and y’know,” he shrugged, “Catch the fireworks?”
You could literally see the excitement and joy on Samandriel’s face and Adam knew he had made the right choice in wanting to bring the angel there.
Then Samandriel’s fell, and Adam looked to him worried, “What’s the matter?”
“Doesn’t that mean that there’s going to be a huge crowd there?”
Adam nodded. So that’s what got Samandriel worried. The crowd. Ever since he’d come back, Adam had stopped going to public events with large crowds. They reminded him too much of his life before and it hurt immensely. But he wanted to do something for the angel, something special. It was just this once anyway.
“Are you sure you still want to go then?”
“Yes. Now stop asking questions. I’ll see you tomorrow in the town square at about six-ish. We can get some dinner and then find a good spot to watch the fireworks okay?”
Samandriel grinned, “Okay.”
------
They had another five to ten minutes till the fireworks started and the place was just too packed. Adam knew there was no chance to get a good view on low ground. He wanted the best for Samandriel, since this was going to be his first fireworks show. Adam wanted it to be memorable. He looked around the area for a better spot. Then he sees the fire escape on one of the buildings. It would be better there.
“Samandriel, come on,” Adam says taking the angel by the hand as he weaved his way through the crowd.
“Where are we going?” Samandriel asks as Adam pulls him through the crowd. He’s running rather quickly.
Adam turns to grin at him, “We gotta go higher,” he says indicating the fire escape.
Adam boosts Samandriel up and then climbs up after him. They get to about the fourth or fifth flight when the fireworks began, loud hissing and whistling followed and then the boom at the end where numerous colours rained down from the sky.
Samandriel stopped him, gaping at the scene, “It’s beautiful,” he whispers watching in awe.
Of course it’s beautiful. This high up, there’s nothing obstructing their view and it seems like it’s just the two of them enveloped by the night, watching as the colourful fireworks lit the ink black darkness. Nothing made him happier than to see Samandriel enjoying himself.
“Thank you,” Samandriel whispered, intertwining his fingers with Adam’s as he shuffled closer to the human. “I’ve never seen such a beautiful sight,” he continues leaning in closer.
Adam wrapped his arms around the angel, “I’m glad that I got to show you the fireworks,” he says smiling as Samandriel cuddles up to him. He rests his chin on Samandriel’s head as they stand there on the fire escape, watching as the fireworks continue. He had never seen anything more spectacular and he’s never felt this at ease in a crowd with anyone. The angel did bring out the best in him.
“Hey Samandriel?”
“Hmm?”
“I like this.”
Samandriel smiles and presses closer to Adam, “Me too.”
