In the puritan town of Boston in the 1600s where homosexuality is a sin, dean and benny manage to fall in love anyway. One day they are caught kissing in the forest on the outskirts of town and as punishment, each of them is forced to wear a scarlet H on his clothing to set him apart as a sinner. They’re forced to live away from the main part of town, which only brings them closer to each other. They befriend the orphan fem!castiel (who is a parallel to Pearl, aka Hester's illegitimate daughter) and take her in as their own. She is witty and wise beyond her years, and even when the church wants to take her away from dean and benny, who have become parents to her, because of their alleged negative influence on the child, she stays with them.
